This photograph is scanned from an original postcard.
If the number on the postcard is the year, that would date this image as 1934, between four and five years after 3171 was withdrawn from service.
3171 is clearly in a dilapidated state with worn and faded paintwork, and still in it’s NER red and cream livery, even though it was well into the LNER era by this stage. Note a couple of smashed windows too. It also looks like the interior has been stripped, with seats, curtains and the petrol engine all appearing to be missing.
